OPEN SESAME: Exercises in entrepreneurship is a body of work developed by artist CMP OFFICE c/o Charlotte-Maëva Perret during the Fashion Space Gallery design residency programme 2017. Her practice is concerned with global cycles of production, precarious economies and man’s relation to materiality. In 2017 she started an on going series of ‘exercises’ that explores the myth of the individual as an entrepreneur.

The research builds on Istanbul’s historical significance as a point of trade along the Silk Road and its strategic location between the Black and Mediterranean Sea. If Turkey once played a central role in east-west cultural and economic exchange, it now acts as the World’s space of refuge.

OPEN SESAME: Exercises in entrepreneurship was in an immersive mixed media installation staging a collection of objects ‘made for survival’. Inspired by today’s Forty thieves, the project develops an allegory between Alibaba, the ancient Syrian folk tale and Chinese E-commerce company

The exhibition will travel and continue at the Istanbul 4th Design Biennial A School of Schools from 22 September–24 November 2018. It will be shown at the ‘CURRENTS SCHOOL’ at Yap? Kredi Kültür Sanat, Istanbul.

‘OPEN SESAME: Excercises in entrepreneurship’ is part of Arcade East’s summer programme, which focuses on Sustainability and Innovation. Ranging from Toolkit for the Future, a day of speculative design workshops in collaboration with the V&A’s The Future Starts Here exhibition programme, to a series of events during the London Design Festival in September including Open Sesame, an installation by 2017 Fashion Space Gallery Design resident Charlotte Maeva Perret, it focuses on challenging notions around design processes and the workings of the fashion system.
